Rewiring an A50

The closer I've looked at my recently-acquired A50, the more I realise that the wiring is a complete dog's/monkey's breakfast.
See pics of attempted 'splice' at head end.
I've got a new loom but before I strip out all and sundry, is there a recommended/tried sequence of  installing it? It looks fairly simple but there's no replacement for experience gained from a more knowledgeable fellow who has done it before. What to do, what not to do, all suggestions gratefully received.

know your pain, my latest A50 chop has hand made loom so nothing looks like it should.
best way to work is remove tank and side covers and battery ,then lay out new loom loosely cable tieing to frame on top of existing loom. once happy, connect connections and reconnect battery then try everything, i it all works then remove old loom and secure new one in place permanently

If you search Yahoo for BSA Wiring Diagrams, there are some useful pictures. I copied the Lucas one enlarged it at work and put it up on the wall in the cave. Buy decent connectors, the blue ones are OK for small repairs.

Hi,
Looks like you have  a snakes wedding there, I simplified the wiring to this:

chaz

the main question concerned he has the replacement loom BUT best way to fit it...
the other option is to get the phone out and take plenty of pictures to refer to then remove and consulting pictures re fit. same sort of conundrum when the bike has been stripped for paint and then replacing looms and parts.

I usually start with laying it out and start in the middle i.e. battery and work my way to the front and back but it is very useful to have every wire labelled up.

Thanks for the input on tackling this job. I have taken pics of the various connection points and think that I've got a reasonable plan ahead.
I've junked the old 'loom' which is basically a collection of random colour-code wires from snap connectors.
I've started at the front - already a hassle loosening off steering damper, removing ignition switch and finding a route through the headstock area without stretching the connection to the Zener diode.
If it was easy it wouldn't be a challenge!
Also, wires for indicators! Looks like I'll have to fit some flashers, none on the bike when I got it.

Hi Bess

Glad you put that drawing on----I was just about to make one.

Hi Mike,
You are most welcome. Note: If you use the original light switch you don't need the diodes

Best regards...

I put indicators on my A65 and took them off again as it was 6v and didn't work very when I used the rear brake i.e.not enough power to work them. You may be able to use them if yours is 12v though.

Hi Bess

I see you have Neg Earth---What coil are you using. I intended to put a fuse box in but looking at yours it seems rather pointless.

Bess,

Thanks for the diagram. Nicely laid out. I don't have the Boyer ignition system, still on the original points. Do you have an oil pressure switch in your circuit?

Bess

Hi Splodger,
I always use oil pressure gauges where possible. Here's what I've got on the bikes at the moment:

Hi Mike,
I have a fuse box on my A10, it took some thought. I have a lot of technology on the bike, the wiring colours were not BSA so thought it was worthwhile. There was a digital voltmeter alongside but it was faulty, waiting on a replacement  >:(.

The coils I used are:

I fitted this one to a A50 and found it neater if exposed:

Hi Bess :)

One last question(?????) What grade wire are you using.?
