Were Shooting Stars fitted with sports cams? I am getting mixed opinions, although I would have thought that they would have.
Would appreciate expert mark opinion please.

JulianS

Yes right from the start of production and the Star Twin before them. Shooting Stars were sporty models. Cam 67 356.

i m no expert julian but i m also of the old belief that the post 60  shooting stars used the 357 cam.
any engine info on the tune of the last stars?

JulianS

cannot see the 357 listed for the A7SS in the parts book for 1960. It kept the same valves, springs collars and collets as the iron head and was listed with 8:1 compression.

The US market got 8.5:1

paulm

357 was a optional extra and the crankcases where stamped accordingley

Hedley

Hi Paulm, where on the crankcase would the cam shaft spec. be stamped?

TTJOHN

Usually at the end of the shaft.

The A10 Rocket engines with the Spitfire cam were usually stamped HHC (high lift high compression) on the case below the engine number.

Then A10 Rocket also had different valve springs collars collets and cups.

Cams were marked on the end with part number but not always.

BSA adverts made much of the A10 fitted with the Spit cam - calling it full race.

The Spit cam was regularly advertised in Motorcycle Mechanics in the 1960s early 1970s by Bob Joyner and others and many were sold and fitted to A7 and A10 engines. I bought one in 1973 and fitted it to my Golden Flash.
