Do you have to put the side casing on before you fill the gearbox with oil.
On a BSA C15 1965. casing on the point side . (1/2 pint of oil ).

No. the outer case is not supposed to hold oil.
(Mine dosnt because it leaks badly!)

When I fill up the gearbox with oil it runs out of the small hole behind kickstarts sprocket.

DerekAnderson8

how much oil do you think has gone in before it overflows?

I just filled my B40 gearbox today 220cc 1/5 pint (what is in the haynes manual) I do not have the standard drain plug as I have replaced it with a magnetic version.

I also appear to have an issue with oil from somewhere around the kickstart so glad I read this thread.

I did a lot of reading over the weekend there is supposed to be a breather hole inside the casing that lets the oil drain back into the box. Apparently a pipe cleaner can be used to clean it.  This being blocked can cause the leak - I'll try and find the thread where I read it

Also read a lot about engine breathing and that bad breathing can cause leaks due to atmospheric pressure being higher inside of the engine therefore pushing oil out where ever it can.  This explained an odd rocker cover mod mine had.

Hi Derek,
As soon as I start pouring oil into the gearbox it starts coming out from a small hole behind the kickstart sprocket.
It looks like I have to put the casing on and then fill up with gearbox oil.
It looks like the way the casting has been done it's a separate compartment where the oil  just sits inside the casing if that makes sense.
Trying to attach a photo but it saying image is too large to send.

Wayne.

Many thanks for sending me this information .
That answers my question that you have to put the side cover on before you fill the gearbox up with oil.
