A65 rebuild

Hi all, just dropped hubs of at Devon rim co, the original rims had" wm 2 18 Jones " stamped on them and I assumed that meant 18" rims, the chap at Devon thought they should be 19" on getting home I measured the old ones and from outside to outside they measure 19" anyone throw some light on this, cheers Dave.

It's the inside diameter of the tyre bead that determines the diameter of the wheel. If your tyre bead ID is 18" diameter, the outside diameter of the bare wheel will be 19" approximately.

It all depends on the model and year of your A65 my A65 is 1963 and has 18" rims whch were used until 1964 then things changed to 19" rims but some models still had 18" rims  on the rear wheel  right up until the end in 1973

Wouldn't you just know it, mines a 64, well I'm going for 18 as this is the figure on the old rims and for the reasons A W explains, thanks for the help, Dave..

While the wheels are away I'm looking at the aluminium brake plate, any advice on the best way to get a nice Finnish would be welcome, cheers, Dave.

I always polish the ally brake plates on my BSA's and, generally, this produces very good results provided they're not damaged or too badly pitted. However, you need a good polishing wheel setup and need the skill to use progressively finer sanding paper to achieve this. If not, it's probably best to leave it to a professional polisher to get the work done.

You can buy a metal polishing kit from ebay. Has all you need to use it on an electric drill. Arbor, wheels polish etc. Works well, need just a bit of care.

Mike can you identify one of the polishing kits on ebay. My mate just got scammed with 56 other people for £23. Not a lot of money to some, but a good gain to someone.
