On dismantling my WD B40 forks I discovered an 'O' ring fitted on the following part on one fork leg described in the parts book as "Packing Piece, Top Bearing" part number 68-5134.

On checking the other fork leg there was no 'O' ring fitted to the same part?  The parts book doesn't show an 'O' ring?

My question is, should there be an 'O' ring fitted here or not?

If there should be one, does anyone know what the part number is for it?

P.S. - Yes I know I need new stanchions  :'(

Looking at your photo's, I would hazard a guess that there should be the same on both legs and I would think it would be the same part number.

Hi John

The part number is for the metal part, the so called 'Packing Piece'.  It's the O ring I'm trying to identify, if its an original fitment, or not...

It is an original fitment and it's there to stop the top bush from chattering rather than to act as a seal. There's no available part number as far as I can see but I've just taken a 3/4" ID O-ring and stretched it to fit. Slightly better than re-using the original.

Dealt with in parts service bulletin G51 from July 1968, part reproduced below, though I think the O ring goes between the top of the fork bottom and the spacer as per your photo and as fitted to the A65 damper rod forks fitted to my A10.

The * by the part number indicates  a new component and the + indicates an additional item.

A concentric O ring will do the job stretched up to just below the lip of the spacer.

Here's the parts diagram from a 1969 B44 showing the oil ring. Ironically, they have shown the spacer upside-down just to confuse everybody!

Many thanks for all that information, it is much appreciated.  Correct 97-2682 O Rings available from Draganfly.
