Can anyone recommend a cheap, reliable multimeter?  Phil (novice)

I think for auto use a relatively cheap one is going to be more than adequate. Here's one on the well known auction site:

Thanks. Will that be suitable for use on my (6v) B40?

Yes and it's also got a diode test mode if you want to check out your rectifier :)

I got this and am using it after a fashion, but find it a bit of a pain not to have any crocodile clips - feel I need three hands!  Do all multimeter crocodile clips fit it?  Phil (novice)

You need to check the size of probe that will fit into the crocodile clips. I bought a meter and clips from Maplins and assumed they would be compatible - they weren't!
