On my 1949 B31 the exhaust clamp at the head is a finned type and I need to replace this as the original bolt on the clamp has snapped off and the remainder buried inside.
I am wondering why this clamp is fitted in the first place as it doesn't appear to do anything useful - no threads on the head for it to screw on and not obviously clamping anything together - could someone enlighten  me on this and do i really need to have it in place?

It's to aid cooling in a very hot area thus 'hopefully' reducing blueing of the chrome.
