Could anyone advise what the correct oil type and quantity for the primary chain/clutch on my B31 1949, I have found engine and g/box but not the clutch - thanks

It should be a 20 grade oil. Don't go to thick otherwise the chain will just cut a trough in it.

A very plain 20 weight oil. No fancy anti friction additives. Your clutch doesn't like it.

As for quantity, the oil should be just touching the bottom of the primary chain.

The owners manual states 2 fl.oz. (55 c.c) for the B31 and B33. So just enough that the chain dips into it.

Check the type of oil which has been used in the primary chain case in the past.  I remember reading somewhere - synthetic and mineral oil will react together and not lubricate.  If you're changing from one to the other - thoroughly clean out the old oil first.  I use Castrol Classic TQF in my 1967 Victor primary chain case which is a mineral oil and it seems to work fine.
