I have a A reg One from Paul Goff on my C15 but am not getting any charge to the battery, I have done all the relevant checks ie across the battery, wiring checked, amp meter shows discharge when lights are on but no charge. I phone Paul to see what could be done about it and he has said send it to someone in Thetford to have it checked out but this will take some time and messing about. I think perhaps I should back to him directly and let him sort it out.
What does the team think?

It's the retailer's (Goff's) responsibility to fix / replace it if it's defective. The chap in Thetford is Al Osborn who is a well known - if sometimes tetchy Norton Owners Club electrical guru who is the original supplier of the A-reg.

It is Goffs responsibility let him replace it. It might be worth giving Al a ring. He can be grumpy but excellent at suggesting logical checks.

Hi,

I agree. Send it back.
On Goff's website there is paragraph about 'not charging'.  This is it.

Hope you don't mind me going slightly off tack on this but have one on my B31 with a gel battery and have recently read that these A reg's are not compatible with this type of battery. True or false?

It is not unknown for a bad battery to pull the voltage down enough to prevent charging. I've had it happen with a brand new battery; we fixed the problem. when the bike's owner dragged an old car battery out of the shed which hadn't been charged for a while. I connected it up and hey presto, the bike was charging.

While I think about it, how long have you had this regulator; is it more than a year?

I have 2 C15s which are converted to 12 volts by the joining of 3 into 2 alternator wires, going into their regulator rectifiers.
Both are fine on daylight running but marginal when all lights are on.
I changed to led bulbs where possible
Bear in mind the early alternator were only 60 watts and even joined together were limited in output.

Try a headlight bulb, solder 2 wires onto it, to light up 1 filament.
Run engine with the alternator lead disconnected and try your bulb across each combination of the 3 output wires.
Each pair should light up your bulb.

If this works , all your stator coils are working.

Did you connect the correct 2 of the 3 stator wires? Not got the wrong pair together

Having had bad experiences with Goff, Osbourne, and AO thing I'd never deal with them again. Both have poor customer skills and like to say that it's your fault when things go awry.
The VReg2 is a poor piece of design anyway. DVR2 every time.
That said, get Goff to fix it as he's the seller.

I have never had a problem with Al. He calls a spade a spade and if you are prepared to listen he will freely help with lots of advice. I have never had one of his units go faulty and i have fitted quite a few to various customers bikes.

I agree that Al can be offputting but he's been very helpful to me - including advice on an old Fender Vibrolux guitar amp!
