The new cover has arrived, ....  but..  . I'm a bit bothered about the quality of this cover. It looks like the back casting die didn't line up with the front casting die. SO there are three 'dinks' in the mating face which will compromise the seal.  IF it had been aligned properly these would have lined up with the holes.

  Has anyone else seen this?

Not having much joy inserting a photo!

Can you lap the old or new cover to the carb body with valve paste ?

Barnsey

Now, that is a thought, but it won't need too much lapping as the aluminium is soft.

I suspect that the dies were wrongly assembled when the lids were cast and an entire batch was wrong.  So 'they are all like that', may not be a valid argument.  Hmmm!?

On closer inspection the old cover was definitely distorted around the screw holes, maybe due to overtightening, hence the mashed up screws.

So, new cover, gasket and screws and the jobs a good-un. No more leak.  This despite the odd dinks in the new cover, which, I note, the old cover didn't have.  I did take a opportunity to scrape off the sharp edges from these 'dinks' with a chisel.

Result! The motto of the story seems to be don't overtighten the screws...

... as always! The previous owner of my Electra must have been a gorilla. It's the only British bike I've had where slackening 1/4" cover screws gives an audible crack like Japanese originals. Surprisingly no threads are stripped.
