Hi. I'm rebuilding a 1968 A65 Thunderbolt engine from a collection of parts. I'm used to rebuilding Triumph 650 engines but this is my first BSA. I'm curious about two Allen bolts/studs that are fitted to the timing side crankcase half. They sit close to the oil pressure relief valve ( please see attached photo). They are absolutely solid and I can't shift them. I've never seen anything like this before. Can anyone tell me what they are for please (and let me know if I need to be able to get them out)?
Thanks

Hi,

They are blanking plugs to block off internal oil ways. If memory serve me well then the one near the OPRV can be used for an oil light or pressure gauge.
I noticed that the scavenge/return pipe in the sump is turned 90ยบ out of position.  It must be pointing straight down.

Dave.

Thanks Dave. At least I know what they are now - and that I won't need to take them out, although an oil pressure light does sound appealing, but that would mean opening up the hole quite a lot to take a pressure switch, so maybe I'll leave well alone!
I turned the oil pickup pipe through 90 degrees so that I wouldn't accidentally bash it when I put the crankcase in storage under my workbench - it just looked too easy to bash it otherwise.
Thanks again.

This is my 63 case,  with an oil light switch and pressure gauge, home made stuf.

Wow! That's impressive-way beyond my capabilities (hammer, drill, big tube of glue).   ;D
