Hi,

I found out that my cylinder barrel is cracked.
I have A50 1969. Original cylinder is 68-880.
I am looking for new one and I would like to ask, if I can use older type 68-0048 ( with two smaller holes in back) if I would use proper screws... Head is for 3/8 size only...

If someone could offer correct cylinder I would be glad 😁

Thank you
Zdenek

Yes, the barrel can be used without any problems. You could easily re-tap the threads to 3/8 BSF.

You find quite a few of them appear on ebay, sometimes not cheap but they do crop up frequently. Even NOS

Hi Zidz read your post yesterday and it rang abell! I do have a set of A50 barrels with all 3/8 stud holes. The casting/part number is 68-47. They were bought in error when desperately seeking A65 ones! They are in extremely good condition throughout. I will seek out the pistons and ascertain the bore size if your interested.
Not sure if we can openly post our phone numbers but if so please post yours and we can talk. Hope this helps.

Hi,

If you do not want to openly post your numbers, use the personal message facility.  Look at 'My Messages' towards the top of the page.

The former owner of my A65 did it 35 years ago the other way round.
He retapped the two 3/8 bolts to 5/16 bsf.

Is it not possible he helicoiled the 5/16 hole? It would be hard to just reduce it.

Hi,

It looks like 3/8" bolts have been reduced to 5/16".  This could be a bit dodgy as I believe that the threads are rolled rather than cut.  Could this result in a weakness?

Dave.

Hi Dave, head has been off and on in all those years. Had never problems, it works for me.

Hi again,

I saw cylinder barrel with casting number 71-13xx and it had only 7 fins. I suppose that it is the same, only there is higher distance between fins against my 68-0888.
Is it correct? Can it be used?

Thanks
Zdenek

71-1337 is any A50 barrel.

Theres one on ebay at present, would want boring to +060. However you would need the crank cases modifying to allow it to fit.

There are other pre 1970 barrels on ebay.
