What are the thoughts on Chatsworth 40 sae40 detergent engine oil for A10 ? It says on the tin for classic engines.

Spaceman

As a minimum, you would need an inline paper filter fitted to the bike to use this type of oil. The health warning that comes with it is not to use if the engine is not clean or has excessive internal deposits ::)

Hi,

I would definitely agree with that.  The last thing you want is for the detergent to mobilise sludge in the sludge trap and cause a restriction to the oil supply to the big ends.  Also, there are cheaper oils that are as good.  Depending on the mileage you intend to do, buying say a 20 litre container will be a bit cheaper again and there is nothing like having some oil in stock to encourage regular oil changes.  Do you know any history of this engine?

Dave.

Thanks Spaceman and Dave, just as I suspected. The bike, I have owned it for around 10/12 years oil is changed regularly and bottom end checked over about 2 years ago inc. sludge trap so it should be reasonable as I don't do a lot of miles on it.
Thanks for your response and duly noted, better safe than sorry it won't be used. I had a gallon given me so there was no cost hence my inquiry.
There is an oil filter in place by the way, the only way.

Thanks again
