Hi I am working on a rough and ready DBD34 scrambler and need a few clutch parts. I have had a google and have to say the various dealers that come up dont seem to have the parts I need or their web site is not very user friendly. I dont know BSAs particularly well so am struggling to take this project forward.
Can anyone recommend  a "go to" spares dealer in the uk that will help me out of my predicament.
Thanks

Is it a 6 spring clutch or a 4 spring. 4 spring ones are Triumph design. You don't say what you are after.

Iddie, The centre is a six spring, the basket which needs inserts looks like it would take a couple more plates but the centre wouldnt? I dont know what I want  as I am uncertain what are my best options. The bike is basic which I like so just frame engine wheels tank seat job. I am going to get it road registered but will not be touring Britain on it, just a trip out locally and bike nights. The chain case is never going to hold oil again as it is so warped and used it is now just a cover so if it keeps a chain I would just squirt it with chain lube. If I went belt drive who does a reasonable priced one? Are these Bsa six spring clutches not that good that I should just go the Triumph conversion route (out of stock at the mo :-\) or ?????
Thanks Ryhatt will give them a go when I have a plan. Can you get any/most B parts from them like Andover Norton offer with Commando spares?
Cheers guys Staffs

The Gold Star clutch should hold five friction plates plus the inserts in the chain wheel if the basket is short then it is most likely off a B31 which has only three plates or a B33 which has four. You say the chain case is warped is the bike fitted with a steel case? These are fitted to the early ridged or plunger frames. The swinging arm frames have alloy cases, very rare for these to distort. A good upgrade is the Triumph style clutch but as you have found out they appear out of stock. Apart from the centre they are based on the earlier Triumph clutch.

C&D Autos, Redditch. Great guys. Very helpful.

Thanks for the info guys. It is an alloy case that is warped but you can tell its had a hard life. I am ok with this as until the bike runs nice I am happy to keep it in its present condition. If I can figure out I will stick a picture on here. Its a lovely looking thing and I have had it running until the clutch gave out.

I see on ebay today that the Four spring Triumph style clutches are available again.

Yes saw that, have emailed the seller to ask him exactly what you get as its only a front on picture. Not sure if the layshaft conversion hub is included.

If it is advertised as fitting a BSA it will come with the correct centre. The one I bought last year did. The centre fits on the gearbox main shift not the lay shift.

DAVE BRADY

Hi,

There are several suppliers of these clutches but check out the SRM one.  It has a thrust washer and comes with the SRM pressure plate. Not cheap but probably the best out there.

Dave.

Hi,

I'm about to have a look at my clutch which is dragging a bit. Assuming that I need to renew/refurbish the clutch, which I believe is a 6 spring, is there any advantage to replacing it with any other clutch? Four spring, Triumph etc.

Thanks

Hi,

Although the six spring can be fettled to work quite well I would say fitting a 4 spring a definite improvement of the 6 spring fitted to the swinging arm bikes.  If you decide to go for a 4 spring then it may be best to but complete new clutch.  Collecting worn parts to make a complete clutch will only result in a worn clutch.
