Cylinder head o rings

Just a question regarding the o rings used  between head and barrels located in the gasket itself. I've checked the manual and they are not shown! They are included in the SRM gasket set so when were they introduced and are they essential?  I can see why they might be a good idea though!  Any thoughts gentlemen?
