hello a65 engine experts.
i had 2 rocker spindles with snapped whit bolts at the large diameter end. i have removed them both but although there is an oil hole in the large end there is no internal oilway to the rest of the rocker spindle. i m not familiar with the cylinder head oilways so what am i missing here?

DAVE BRADY

Hi Eddie,

I suspect that the bits that had snapped off were the blanking screws for the oil way that goes through rocker spindle.
The spindle itself has holes for the oil to come out to lubricate the rockers and series of grooves around and along the spindle to distribute the oil along the rocker.
On page A5 of the manual the oil route to the rockers is visible with a dotted line and B7 has a drawing of the spindle.
I hope this helps.

Dave.

Hi Eddie.

If you have fully removed the end "stop" bolts and any little bits.

I suggest you carefully and gently go into the oilway with a a long 1/8th hand drill to loosen/remove most of the garbage, there are also 4?holes drilled into the shaft, a piece of 1mm welding wire will usually shift anything stuck in them, then use a pressure line to blast it through..

I've done a few recently and if you have a serious problems I have a couple of spares, already cleaned, I would be happy to part with.

hello dave and mike. yes i removed snapped bolts from both spindles. i remember from around 30 years ago that the bolts shearing was a common problem but didnt worry about oilways in those days.
i tried to probe the oilway with a tiny drill in my lathe but as the blocked oilway was metal in both spindles i wanted to make certain before i continue with the drill bit.
thanks for the spares offer mike. i found that all the thrust and spring washers from a plentiful a10 pushrod cover fits the a65 rockers but i need to find a sharp small drill next.

I am a big fan of Bosch Cobalt drills - expensive but they will drill through anything (metal)!

DAVE BRADY

Hi,

Is the metal that is still in there a bit of the blanking bolt?  Are the other holes clear or is the spindle blocked right the way through?

Dave.

EDDIE SIMPSON

hello dave. if the blocked oil gallery was part of the blanking bolt it means the blanking bolt went past an oil gallery on the large diameter section. confused, thats what was holding me back from continuing with the drill.. i will have to source a colbalt drill about 1/16"  as advised.

DAVE BRADY

Hi,

It will be interesting to see what is blocking it.  It must be hard if you need a cobalt drill and I dread to think what the wear on the shaft and rockers must be like if no oil could get through.  The rockers them selves have oil ways to oil to the push rod cups and oil releasing in to rocker box must help to cool the top end a bit.

Dave.

Hi Eddie,

As I recall the blanking bolt is 1/4" x 1/4" so it only goes in about four threads. As said I've got a bagful of odd bits of rocker. Plus 5 complete sets. I want to keep one set but otherwise up for grabs.

It might be worth trying an LH drill.

hi mike,
i wonder if you could look at your spindles  give some idea of hole size as both my spindles blocked.
i could take up your kind offer if i run into trouble.

Eddie I'll do better than that. I've forgotten your address, if you send it I'll send you a rocker shaft and you can see for yourself. Just send it back when you've done with it. Or keep it if you need to. email---  phahmah@outlook.com
