Is there a way to filter the oil returning back to the tank?i,ve since started using detergent oil and haven,t cleaned the sledge trap in the crankshaft..i,m concerned that I am sending sledge thru RT he bike since I'm using detergent oil now..can I collect the contaminants coming out of the return pipe that flows back into tut he tank?

Hi fenderman,

The filter is a really good addition to the oil system.  How many miles had the engine done before changing to a detergent oil?  A high mileage could mean a lot of sludge but most of it will probably stay in place as it usually needs drilling or chiselling out. However, some may be mobilised by the detergent and the first place it has to go on route to the filter is the big ends.  A low mileage engine is likely to have sludge that is more easily cleaned away but this could well hold metallic particles from the running in process.  It would be interesting to hear from someone who has done this mid way through an engines life and if they had any problems.

Hi,

A suggestion to go with this is to fit a sump plate with a magnet.  This way you will remove a lot of ferrous material from the oil before it goes through the scavenge side of the pump. At least it should, along with the filter, mean that any harmful sludge only goes through once.  If you decide to with stick with the standard sump plate then put a strong magnet on it and run the engine.  It will hold ferrous material in the sump for cleaning out later.
