Hi Everyone
I have been assembling the rear wheel on my 70 Victor as part of a major rebuild. Wheel has been rebuilt with a new rim, powder coated hub, new bearings etc. I am pretty sure I have assembled the hub as per the handbook/exploded diagram etc. The brake drum assembly went in first and works fine. Then the QD wheel into the splines, inner distance piece, speedo drive and outer distance piece and spindle inserted. At this stage wheel spins fine on its bearings. Problem is as I tighten the main spindle the wheel binds and  by the time the spindle is tight the wheel is locked!
So any ideas as to what I am doing wrong. At one stage I thought it was a build up of the powder coating binding the speedo drive but have cleared that to minimal effect.

Try assembling it without the speedo drive to determine whether the speedo drive or bearing/spacer assembly is at fault. Add a washer on the spindle between the spacers to replicate the thickness of the speedo drive body when fitted.

Thanks Rupert I'll give that a try and report back

Hi Rupert

Tried the assembly without the Speedo drive and still binding I'm afraid - back to the drawing board (Or in my case reassembling the gearbox as alternative therapy!)

Perhaps it's one of the bearings that not fully home?

Rupert

Agreed re bearings etc. Strip everything out of the crinkle hub and start again.
One indicator is that the threaded lockring on the spline end of the crinkle hub should be flush with the end of the splined section when fully tight.

Rupert

Offside hub bearing, push the outer race into the hub till the inner race (of both bearings) locks solid.
Then from the near side use the spindle to tap the end of the spindle sleeve until the bearings just free off.
Reckon you may not have had the offside bearing fully home, so tightening the spindle put Pre-load on the inner race before it seated fully home on the spindle sleeve.

Although I have stripped out and reassembled in order to check things your suggestions sound sensible so will give it another try.
