Hi guys
I'm having big issues trying to start my 67 A65 lightning from cold, Its been fully rebuilt over winter with standard parts, Compression is 125 on each cylinder, Boyer ignition is working OK checked all components and new wiring harness, tried NGK and champion plugs, Carbs are fully rebuilt with all jets standard and clear with new jets/cut out/air slides etc.
Managed to get running dosing the cylinder and ran absolutely perfect with strobe timing spot on ? Starts half a kick when warm but next day absolutely nothing when cold ?
Any help would be appreciated
Cheers Dave
Sorry also checked for air leaks when running and couldn't find anything?

Hi,

Do you have chokes and air filters fitted?  If no chokes then a good 'tickle' usually does the job. If no filters then it could be a bit weak for starting.

Dave.

Hi Dave
Has chokes fitted but on trumpets rather than air filters but I do have some so will give that a go ?
Thanks

davben23

Nope sadly still nothing after trying filters  :'(

Hi,

Clutching at straws but do the carbs flood when tickled?

Dave.

If it starts easily when its hot that suggests that the mixture is about right, but when its cold it might be worth flooding 1 carb and closing the choke slides.
Have you tried spraying easy start into the carbs?

 Hi Martin
Yep tried both methods I'm afraid and had nothing its really puzzling me ? Only seems to want to go if i dose up the cylinder from cold which isn't really ideal?

I'm having the same problem with my A50 which is  fitted a new concentric carb. It's hard to start from cold, but perfect when warm, the plugs are sooty.  It does not have a choke, but floods easily.

Mine is also difficult to start from cold - and I use a roller starter! It takes several attempts to get it running, I'm glad I don't have to do this by kicking it!
I understand that you have set the timing by the book; I would suggest trying it with the ignition retarded a bit, precision wasn't top of the list in the early 60s.

A10 JWO

I suspect those sneaky primary circuits that no one can find till they have seen them on Youtube being cleaned properly.

Hi
Not heard of this ? I can't seem to find on YouTube if possible can you post  a link please?
Thanks Dave

This is just a thought and may have no bearing whatsoever. Whats the state of your battery. Boyer Electronic Ignition aint happy with low batteries. I've not had a problem but I'm informed that it doesn't need to be very weak to cause a problem like you are suggesting.

Hi Mike
I had also read this and the battery is a year old and been on trickle charge
with health check ok (discharge test).
Boyer sparks every time when on test

Hi,

I think A10 JWO has a point as people have had problems with carbs out of the box.  Carb cleaner and an airline should remove and deposits.  It think the latest Boyer is less sensitive to a low battery.  I believe that their default setting is fully advanced so a good battery for fully retarded and easier starting.

I seem to recall that Boyer told me the default setting is something like 78 degrees.???????????So a good battery is fairly vital. A thought is that you have a super spark but not at the right time??
