Hello, as a final mid life crisis I've just purchased a very early A65 unit - 1962. Not original in many ways but in good nick. Decided to upgrade to 12v plus electronic ignition and have fitted the kit (Vape/Wassell), Rectifier/Regulator and new battery etc  but have run into problems - wiring has been much modified over the years so ideally I need a mobile mechanic to sort things out. Can anyone recommend someone who operates in the Mid Sussex area? Any recommendations gratefully received, cheers, Stuart.

Failing that reconsider doing it yourself.  No turn signals so really quite simple.  You could take out the wiring that's there and basically start from scratch following a schematic.

I would suggest as previous post but change it to negative earth at the same time.

A few moons ago someone posted a wiring diagram to do just what you wish to do. I cant remember who or when (Bess probably)

It's time consuming and a bit of care required but its not a major task.

Good luck.

thanks for the feedback gents - it is lack of time which is an issue. One question re the ignition - I'm getting a good spark but no sign of starting so I'm thinking the timing is out. The Wassell instructions are a bit sketchy but it looks like I align to the A mark with TDC. On this early model there is no 'key' to fix TDC so its all manual but am I right re. the Wassell alignment?

If you're looking to start it you've got most of the wiring done already.  But...

I believe you need to set the ignition to the A with the motor at the full advance point - not TDC - so you will need to find 34 degrees before TDC.
You can find the advance point by affixing a degree wheel set to 0 degrees at TDC and rolling back to 34 degrees or....
Put a dial gauge on the top of the piston.  Don't know offhand how far down the piston is at the advance point but you can look it up as well as I can.

Fully advanced the piston should be .309" before TDC. Basically 3/10ths inch.

I find that it is much more accurate using a degree disc timing by degrees rather than by measuring down the plug hole. The 1962 workshop manual states .358" or 9.093mm in degrees that is 37 degrees.

Strange the differences.

I've got 2 manuals one says .309 and the other says .304 both saying 34 Degrees BTDC. That's what I've always used so which is right???

Should it be 34 or 37 I would be interested to know. Did it change by the years????.

thank you very much gents, good progress and bike now starts! Just need to sort the lighting wiring but I probably can sort that over time.

Hi Mike. I had this problem about the correct ignition timing when I fitted Pazon electronic ignition as their instructions say 34 degrees but my 1962/63 manual says 37 degrees. I contacted Pazon about the difference and all they said was try both and use whichever suits the running of the bike mine is set at 37degrees and starts and runs perfectly. Someone some time ago told me that SRM advise running at 32 degrees, so I think I will leave mine at 37 as it has been running at that setting for about 8/9 years now. Just checked on a CD that I have which covers all models from 1962/70 and the earlier models like mine it is 37degrees but from about 1966 onwards the manuals state 34 degrees. So as mine runs OK as it is if it ain't broke don't try to fix it.

My sentiments exactly. If it aint broke etc. Strangely I've always used the 34 degrees with points and electronic with sound results So like if it aintm etc.

Good to have that extra heads vv  SRM
