Hello everyone could someone please tell me how to strip my fuel filler cap to its component parts.
Also it's current fixing at the hinge is basically a pin bent over at the end, which can't be right. What should the fixing be like? Any pictures appreciated
Thanks

wouldnt be surprised that the pivot is a split pin.
as for the stripping , normally riveted together , if the cork seal has to be changed , the new one  can be soaked in warm water to make it pliable and pulled to fit.

what model?

Hi,
     Failing Chaz's suggestion.

Grind the central peened section off using a power file, drill and tap the pin and after reassembly join with a screw and washer instead of re-peening.

The hinge pin is usually a roll pin.

Best wishes...

Thanks for the replies. On closer inspection, the hinge pin is actually a nail !! Cut off and bent over at the end. I guess a roll pin would be a neat solution.
As for the central peened section, as you can see by the photo, it's a flat square piece,  but I cant tell what diameter of material I'll be left with to drill and tap a hole if I was to grind it away.

Hi,

Is it possible that the square bit is there to fit into a square hole so that the 'wing nut' can be tightened against it?  A bit like on the back of a mirror.  Could it be that turning the 'wing nut' past the open position would undo it?

Dave.

Good suggestion Dave
I just tried to grip the square part to turn the "wing nut " against it, but there's not enough meat on it to grip it with anything.
Good thought though

Fair enough Bess but to be honest, lockdown boredom has set in and I'm looking for something to occupy me, besides I enjoy a challenge, I'm going to zinc plate the "wing nut"  I've already plated all the other parts on the bike that needed it. And polish up the alloy part.

I'm with Bess on this one Waley, that rust looks real tricky to deal with.

I bought one of the caps that Bess mentioned and had to fit a decent rubber gasket which I cut out of some stuff I had laying around.... (and which I'm hoping will do the sealing job)

Also got rid of the paint and polished it up, soldered a couple of brackets to the tank and fitted a screw for the pivot.

Mind, I haven't tried any of it yet (still being built), so it could all turn to rubbish on my first ride out.......

Turned out not too bad in the end. I managed to plate the " wing nut" part without removing it. Just hung it upside down in the electrolyte. . Polished the alloy cap and fitted it with a 3mm stainless roll pin from Amazon.

Good to see something original brought back to life rather than fitting a pattern part. There is usually great a great deal of satisfaction in restoring something as well. Well done

Nice one Waley.
Well done.
