I have known heads with cracks in the bolt holes, they have been repaired by opening out and fitting a sleeve.
compression testers are cheap enough and help in diagnosis,, Ive just used mine on the Yam XS LH pot was 50psi, ran an engine flush and its now 130psi.  I was thinking of a sticking valve or rings or as the bike had not run for 11 years he may have broken a ring. saved me a strip down.

Thanks for that. Well worth looking into the crack aspect and of course Comp Tester.

Ok. I finally bit the bullet and pulled the head off. In truth it was oil bubbling up the side studs.

Reason===OOOPs one of the head bolts was not properly torqued. I'll do an honest re-phrase of that. I hadn't properly tightened one of the head bolts, Guess what. It was the last one that I took out, or else I could have just tightened it and that should have been "The cure"

So shortly I'll put the head back on and see where it goes from there.
