I have a 1965 Lightning; the gear selector shaft has seen better days, the spigot that fits into the gearbox case is now quite worn. As far as I can see, this part is no longer serviced, although a number of companies in India are advertising new ones (presumably reverse engineered). Does anyone have any experience of these? Do they work or do they create a new problem?

Shippy

I had mine repaired by Draganfly. They cut the old shaft off and pin a new one on, it was a reasonably quick service and works perfectly.

Martin S

Thanks for your reply Shippy. The splines on my selector shaft were replaced before I got the bike and they work fine, the problem is at the other end of the shaft where it fits into the gearbox end casing.

Hi Martin,

As this end goes in to the aluminium of the gearbox plate that is probably worn as well.  Having a bush made may work otherwise if the gearbox plate is not worn then have a look at the link below.

couple of options but without drawing them out its hard to tell.
you need to measure parts and see the best option, for small reclaims you could try a MBDU or a flanged FMBDU bush.
another option would be to get the location hard chromed,. but expensive.

you need to see which part is worn then either bush the case or find another quadrant.
if the steel is worn, I doubt as harder than the ally casing, get the diameter ground down true then get a custom bush made with a smaller hole.

Thanks for your thoughts Chaz, that was pretty much the conclusion that I was coming to. I was trying to avoid a complete strip down..

Hi.
May I suggest you take a look at ebay item No352510892390. Its a replacement shaft. I bought a couple of these and had my change mechanism repaired by local machinist that cost about £20 (not too sure cant remember). They require a bit of machining then brazing into place with a final tidy up also machining. I did the brazing which kept the cost down.
Drags will do the whole thing for about £75??? plus the item cost (i think thats about correct at the mo)
I have no complaints about mine.
If you care to dig back through the posts I put pics on at the time.

Mike, Ive just had a second done by drags very tidy, but I think the problem Martin has is the opposite end, the short plain diameter that fits inside the casing

Hi Chaz

Yep I understand that however after fitting the new shaft, we turned it round in the lathe and did the same to the "inner" end. Machined it out to size and used a short length of EN24 brazed in and re machined at the join. Providing the splined end is OK it shouldn't present a problem to replace just the inner spigot

What did Drags charge.??

£106 inc vat and p&p

I could have machined it myself, and if I can find an old part might have a go myself, the previous one I had done was brazed or welded this one has a roll pin through so will see if its belt and braces or a new way of doing it. bit more expensive then the B40 they did earlier in the year?

Another point comes to mind--- that is exactly where is the wear. is it on the shaft or in the housing???

Strangely the wear appears to be on the shaft, the spigot certainly looks very tired. I have not been able to measure the hole as I haven't removed the gearbox - I only set out to change the oil pump.....

In addition to Indian supplied new parts on ebay, I have also seen them advertised by De Groot in Holland for 40 Euros. Does anyone have any experience of these?

Hi,

I have had a NOS clutch drum and kickstart quadrant from de Groot.  Obviously both good as NOS rather than new.  If you contact them they will tell you if it is NOS or new.  I think they have a good reputation so will have good parts.  It might also be worth tying C&D Autos.
A big advantage of buying the whole thing is that the little selector plungers and springs will be new as well.
When doing my gearbox I fitted a new selector plunger with a ball in the end to make gear changes smoother.  It does work.

Dave.

Hi Dave,
I have ordered one from De Groot - they told me its NOS, so quality should be no worse than original, and at 40 Euros its a lot cheaper than trying to rework my existing one.

I will update you when I have fitted it.

Thanks for your help,

Martin

when I sent the B40 selector away for the new splined shaft repair, Drags also changed a finger for me as they said it was worn, recieved the old one back as a spare.
