I'm looking at fitting the fuel tank on my 1965 A65 lightning but don't know quite what rubbers I need to fit- to mount the tank, which has (or will have) the chrome top strip... and the 68-8083 filler cap.
(very little in the spares book relates to what I actually have....)

Would these be suitable:

plus  68-8062 tank bracket

and rubber  68- 8054

please?

Thank you

Dave.

Hi,

The tank rubbers look right.
There is also a rubber piece that goes in the 'cup' that fits in the top of the tank before the washer and nut. Also a rubber ring that goes under the rim of the cup and in the indent in the tank

Hi,
The two mounting rubbers 68-8017 & 68-8018 shown are for the 4 gallon tank.

If you have the two gallon tank you will need to change 68-8017 and use 68-8110 for the front.

Best wishes...

OOps, I meant to put some images in to show the tank type (I would think it's a 4 gallon jobbie.....)

I'll try images now:

Bess

Hi,
Yep 4 gallon, Australian model by the looks of it  :)

Nice one Bess.

I was beginning to believe they must be 'continent specific' (which they were to a degree in the good ol US of A). then it dawned on me....

The two Under tank rubbers ordered and I'll either buy the others when they are available... or make some part- like the bracket.

Thanks for your, and Dave's great help.

Regards,
Dave.

Hi Dave,
             Apologies if you are aware....

If you are going to make the tank bracket a clutch spring cup is the same dimension as the bracket cup, and welding the cup base to the bracket rather than put a set in the bracket does the same job.

Hi,

If you do not want to make one it looks like 'British Bike Bits'  have them for £12.

Dave.

Thanks guys, that's really helpful.

I've placed an order for the bracket and tank trim with Burton bikes....... eventually. ('Taint cheap is it... £58.00 ?)

Do you know the correct filler cap for this tank? (I can't see one that grips the two protruding internal pins)

Again many thanks for your help,
Dave

Hi Dave,
             I agree that is expensive.

The tank cap should be this one:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/164283014496

It looks like the bracket that's normally brazed to the filler rim on the tank badge side has broken off. I had the same issue but managed to drill tap and screw it back on so as not to damage the paint.

Again Bess, many thanks- I can see how that one would work.

I'll get on to it.

Regards,
Dave.

Well, being a meanie, and working on the pictures of the cap you pointed me to Bess, I sourced one a bit cheaper- but which looks pretty much the same.  https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BSA-TRIUMPH-NORTON-AJS-ROYAL-ENFIELD-2-1-2-WINGED-ALLOY-PETROL-TANK-CAP/143511841120?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649

I received it today and it wouldn't tighten down (as I suspected it might not) but after cutting a rubber washer found it tightened down no probs.

I'll probably find out why it doesn't quite work, but at the moment I have a big smile on my fizzog...

Thanks again Bess.

Bess

Hi Dave,
            A result.

My cap was also poor, the thin 'fibre' seal is useless, hopefully your betterment will solve the issue. I was concerned with the tank air vent as I believe its through the thumbscrew shaft and using a thicker seal may stop the venting.

Best wishes...

I must admit the same thought occurred to me Bess, so I thought about cutting another washer with a bigger central hole- which should allow venting through the felt washer-thingie, in the middle...

Out with the scalpel and rubber matting again...... (does that sound a bit weird?...)

Thanks again Bess.

Dave.

Next job is prepping and spraying the tank... Not sure of the best type of paint.... Acrylic, Enamel or Cellulose?

Did, possibly the most important job of all- stripped and polished the fuel tank cap......

Looking at making a couple of brackets to hinge the cap.....

Thinking of soldering them on- what do you reckon?
