Hi all, can anyone help with some advice on the rear brake drum bearing on my 1966 A65 Lightning.

I think it's the same on all the pre oil in frame models, although I know that some years have a different sized bearing in the drum for some reason. My bike has the same size bearing in the drum as the two in the crinkle hub.

The parts book shows a shim in between the brake drum bearing and its retaining circlip?

Is this shim just for ensuring the bearring is held in place properly, eliminating any float between the bearing and the circlip.

There is no mention of this shim in the workshop manual and I have always thought of shims as being something that are 'fine tuned' to cater for any dimensional tolerances.

My way of thinking is that the bearing should be pressed home and then the circlip fitted, after which you would use a feeler gauge, or slip gauge, to measure the gap between the circlip and bearing to determine how thick the shim should be.

Your knowledge of this would be greatly appreciated.
