Hello
Please can someone let me know the best and correct way replace the kickstart spring, I have replaced this but the kick start does not return correctly and after replacing with the clutch off, I thought I had it in the correct position, I suppose that I have to take the clutch off again, which in itself, is a job I really don't relish. It is a Bantam D7.
there doesn't appear to be anything about this in the manuals.

You can tease it back on just , without doing anything to the clutch.
But
1 does it have the decent return tension with the outer cover off ?

2 does it tighten up with the cover on ?

If above , are all the primary cover dowels in place allowing correct location of the cover.

That's a really good article, I sold my Bantam 40 years ago and I still read it right through ;D
I do have one tip if you decide to take the clutch apart - check what's behind you. I didn't and 2 of the springs flew into an enormous pile of junk and I had sort though the whole lot. >:(

Thank you Coddy, That is a great article and a really easy, understandable, hopefully now finally, can sort it out correctly.

Decided that I have to get a new spring first, the one thats on there now tends to distort when I try winding  it up but I will get it done when it gets a little warmer.

I decided to do the job correctly, so I removed the clutch, put the new return spring in, winding it up so that I had decent tension then replacing clutch all I have to do now is replace cover and refill with lubricant.
Once up and running I will get a dating cert and try to retain original reg number.

Do you have log book or V5?  You may be able to get a replacement form the DVLA.  If not, then its a dating certificate and application.  Its a bit of a lottery as you don't know whether the original reg has been re-issued on not.  In my case on a 1953 bike it had not and I got a replacement V5 which is cheaper and easier.

I Love this comment, so true

Well, I did it, I took the clutch apart and put on a new kick start spring, hell of a job but I made a tool to hold the clutch using an extractor, worst job was the retaining clip when re-assembling, but I managed, all good now. Thanks to all for  the input.
