When I went through this with one of my bikes certified copies were used. I would never trust the DVLA with original paperwork. What was fortunate in my case was the registration records not only survived but had a very, very rare feature; the VIN was recorded. Armed with this, the original buff logbook and dating paperwork the DVLA just sent me a new V5c.

If your bike is unaltered and registered with a previous owner on your buff logbook,  if the FRAME number and the Registration number are  still the same as in the original logbook, you need to fill in form V62 (obtainable on-line) with this information, state the previous V5C is lost, stolen, or destroyed and send it to the DVLA with a cheque for £25.  They will issue a new V5C in your name.  You won't need to send any existing documents to them.

That is good news but check that if you asked to sorn it when you filled in paperwork they actually did. A few weeks after getting my trident re-registered I got a letter saying it was not insured and I could be fined, when I checked online it had been taxed, not a massive problem as I simply sorn'd it but caused me a few moments of confusion, and if I hadn't checked could have led to a fine and points.
