All,

I've got the gearbox removed from my 1969 A65T - well most of it - the top gear pinion and the output bush(s) are still stuck to the output bearing. I've got a new bearing on order, but my first question is whats the best method for removing the bushes and final drive from bearing - second, with the new bearing, does it drift out from inside the gearbox out toward the primary drive or from the primary drive side into the gear box?

thanks,

Andy

Hi Andy,

The sleeve gear should tap out of the bearing. Be careful as too much force could cause damage to the bearing housing.  Obviously the sprocket must be removed first.
Once the oil seal is removed you will see a circlip that needs to be removed.  The bearing drifts out from inside the box but it is best to apply a bit of heat to make this easier.  Again this ensures no damage to the bearing housing.
When fitting the new bearing put it in the freezer overnight and again use a bit heat on the case.  The bearing should just about drop in.
Not having a press, I like to use a big nut and bolt and a couple of plates to get the bearing in square.  The old bearing can serve as spacer on the outside.

Just to add to Dave's informative comments, I like to warm the housing up with an electric heat gun before fitting the new seal, it spreads it just enough so you can push the oil seal in by hand, without trying to drive it in.

Some loctite thread sealant on the outside will help it slide in easier and will ensure there are no leaks from the outer edge.

thanks all.

The top gear cog (complete with bushes) popped out after a couple of taps with the copper and hide mallet. I've got a bearing puller on order and bearing installer on order, hopefully they along with the bearings will arrive at roughly the same time......

You shouldn't need a bearing puller. Remove the circlip and put it cold upside down in a hot oven. The bearing should drop out after a few minutes.
