Hi,
I have a type 13 rear hub fitted to my A10. I have experienced it moving on the spindle to the LHS until the sprocket retaining nuts hit the swinging arm.

This happened after I first built the bike (a few years back) and I thought I never tightened the bearing retainer sufficiently. It happened again last night, on strip down the bearing retainer 42-6335 and the bearing 42-5819 were not in the hub. The retainer was on the brake plate and the bearing fell out on the floor. I guess the outer race turned in the hub and friction turned the LH retainer until it unscrewed from the hub. It wouldn't have happened if the retainer was a RH thread, bizarrely part 42-6335 is LH and the Haynes manual states its RH.

Has anyone else experienced this and is there a cure? I intend to use a high strength loctite product.

Thanks...

JulianS

I have also had the bearing retainer come loose - a few times over many years of A10 ownership. Not had the bearing come out though.

I tighten it as far as possible with the peg spanner by hand then tap it around a bit further using a hide mallet. I think the threads on the retainer wear, especially the mazac version, so will be looking for a new steel one the next time it happens.

Thank you Haynes - one of the first jobs I did on the A10 some 48 years ago, was to replace the rear wheel bearings. The Haynes manual had just been published and I read that the retainer was right hand thread so that is the way I unscrewed it, of course it wrecked the hub bearing housing..............should have seen LH on the retainer...............

Hi Julian,
Thanks for the information. I will keep a watchful eye on the hub in future and as you say keep a steel retainer ready.

Best wishes...
