Hi all. So I am re-building my 1960 C15.
Placed the bearings  and inserted the bottom yoke through the steering head.
Placed on the cover plate, the top yoke and then the top nut.
I have tightened up the nut as prescribed to take up any slack but not over tighten.
My question is this:
There is around 3 to 4mm slack in the top yoke.
So, where do I sit the top yoke before I tighten up the pinch bolt?
At the bottom with minimal clearance from the top cover, somewhere in the middle, or hard up against the nut at the top?
Or....am I doing something wrong?
Thanks in advance.

If the balls are all seated properly there should be no slack at all.
Is the nut seated and tightened properly? Did you do a dry run first to check all the fittings and threads are clear?
I always try and get an extra pair of hands to help putting the steering head together.
Grease the bottom yolk and fit the balls into the grease and then seat it in place and get someone to hold firmly in place while the top cup is greased and the balls fitted and then offer up the top yoke and fit nut before helper releases grip.
Something does sound amiss with your assembly

I better take it apart and try again. I thought it was a bit strange.

Ive done the B40 steering recently, bought a new top nut for the top yoke/lower stem. wouldnt screw all the way down, 6mm shy , put the old one in and its ok, either tight on the thread or outside diameter.
re greased and seated all now ok.
