How often should you change/top-up the grease in the dynamo chain area?

It should be good for years, but it does settle out around the edges of the compartment if not enough grease was used.

You might want to check the chain tension occasionally though.

It is worth considering changing to a belt drive, which I did on my A10 many years ago.

If a chain breaks it can cause serious damage to the timing cases, and also it is quite difficult to remove either of the sprockets, and the setup can be noisy. Look at all the minor damage inside the compartment caused by incorrectly tensioned chains.

In this conversion the small pulley pulls off using a mag pinion extractor and the large one comes off with the assistance of  timing cover screws in the threaded holes you see in it.

Hi Julian,

Yes I have considered a belt and possibly I will go that way eventually, but I will try another chain as the mileage I do is very small. But I normally change the oil every 1K mikes, so I will check then. Cheers.

I take a look at the dynamo chain grease when I remove the outer timing cover. It can go undisturbed for years.
