hi was wondering i have a a65 replica hornet with high level straight through pipes.too loud for my neigbours :) is it possible to quiten it down as can not find a small enough universal silencers so was thinking baffles in the pipes/?

LightningAndStarfire

Hi, baffles in the pipes will seriously impede the performance of the machine. Attempts to run at the reduced maximum power could result in overheating when the engine tries to push out exhaust gases against high back pressure.

Splodger

Lightning and Spitfire used the same 'lump' and generated similar horsepowers. Why don't you fit pipes/silencers from/for either of those and keep your hi-levels for when you sell the bike. It won't make a significant difference to performance nor jeopardise the engine. Also, check needles and jets for your carbs to match that for whichever exhaust model you choose.

thanks for the replys.i was concernd by just baffling the ends.i have put a set of lightning pipes and silencers on but just throwing it out if it was possible to silence straight pipes.

I would be really concerned about what my neighbours thought for the 5 minutes it will be running in their ear shot . Like they are perfect . Tell them its that noisy to stop the kids stepping out in front of it .

I understand what your saying ducati but don't fancy pc plod pulling me over every 2mins either don't no if it is legal to run with open pipes

ducati2242

I sometimes take my Ducati 999R to the track-day . It wakes the dead . I have been told that I cant run it on the track , occasionally , as it is too loud . I have ridden it to Italy and to the nurbergring and never once been stopped for noise . They cant measure noise at the road side anyway as they dont have the equipment . It would be the least of my concerns .

STAR TWIN

I live near one of the UK's best biking roads and also Scotland's most dangerous stretch of road (as was featured in a TV advert on hazards and safe driving).  As you can imagine, both are favoured by bikers, not all of whom live to tell the tale. Blue flashing lights are all too common.
Despite being a lifelong all year round biker, the racket every decent evening from poorly silenced and unsilenced bikes howling over these roads really annoys me. It really does not do the whole movement any favours to add to noise pollution. It's just adding ammunition to the anti-bike lobby which is increasingly powerful. We can be our own worst enemies.
And you'll go deaf!

well, your wishes may come true. https://news.sky.com/story/cameras-with-noise-detection-systems-to-tackle-motorists-with-loud-vehicles-11737545

I will post a picture of my silencers on the Triumph chop later

I was told that the silencers were from a VW Beetle, they slip into the downpipes  and held in by a bolt. they can be removed or left in depending on preference.
