A50 Mikuni and Primer

wondering if this was something ever proven out by Americans. my A50 Royal star returned from Americal less the Amal carb but with a Mikuni  TM carb and a primer system. the primer is fed from the fuel line out of the tank , through a plunger type valve and then fed into the inlet side of the carb. any thoughts.  presumably acting as a choke or Harleys Pumper system
