B33 main bearing circlip

I'm replacing the main bearings on my B33. The outer drive side bearing has a circlip. The one fitted to the bike had a 'cut away' so that you could lever it out. When I tried to get it out the cut away and a small section broke of. Does anyone have an idea of how I can get the circlip out? I've tried drilling a small hole in the circlip but because it's hardened it just blunts the drill bits.

     Try using a carbide tip drill, eg:

After drilling I would ensure the clip is free to rotate in its groove before trying to remove with circlip pliers, it may be seized or have sideways pressure from the bearing.

I have struggled in the past for hours with sharpened screwdrivers and O ring removal tools.  I have a Maplin rotary tool that has come in handy when using the carbide bits.
