Does anyone have a gearbox filler cap with attached dipstick for a A65. I bought a plastic one which was supposed to fit 1968 up but it is far too small to screw into the gearbox.

Did you order part no. 68-0865? I assume you have the threaded hole in the Inner Timing cover? or is the gearbox filler in the top of the RH crankcase above the gearbox? I believe during 1967 to 68 there could be both means of determining gearbox oil level. If a plain screw cap (40-0238) above the gearbox in the RH crankcase you would have a drain screw with a standpipe (68-3167) to drain the oil to the correct level. HTH

Sounds like you have been trying the dipstick in the filler hole that normally has a metal screw cap in it.  The plastic dipstick does not go in there as there are gears and shafts and other bits and pieces down there.  It  goes into another hole close by in the timing chest cover.  It sounds like your A65 does not have such a correct hole to put the plastic dipstick into.  If it had the right hole, as in the later models, it  would be obvious where you should put the dipstick..... and there would have already been one in there as that is what they always contain unless the dipstick has gone missing.

Yes you're right, mine has the plug to get the correct level.

It would be interesting to know what the letter designation is on your bike, A65 LA/ LB / TA / TB / FB / SA / SB ?

any with *A would have the cover screw which you require. They changed mid 67 to the later type according to the manuals, though I have only ever seen 68+ to have the plastic dipstick type (mine was registered Feb 68, it has the plastic type), they could also be replacement cases.
