auto advance and retard

Hi Guys,
Recently finished building a 1953 Gold flash,having prob's with the auto/advance, when tightened bob weights go tight, new springs fitted
but to no avail.
Can anyone throw out some light, excuse the pun.

When the sleeve nut is done up and unit attached to magneto it does not quickly return to retard if the unit is opened by hand, due to the weight of armature, magnetism, friction in the bearings and brushes and the contact breaker heal when it is on the cam.

Kick the engine over and it should easily return.
