In the Haynes manual it says installation is the reverse procedure, so i'm having a bit of trouble in the fact that the bolt in the auto advance doesn't want to pop onto the tapered shaft of the magneto.
I don't want to strip the threads but do i just keep tightening until it goes on properly? The cogs are not sitting flush to each other. I hope that i'm making sense. Thanks in advance.

When you say the cogs are not sitting flush, are you referring to the magneto cog not sitting flush with the camshaft cog? If so, it may mean the magneto cog has not been fitted correctly making it then difficult to fit the auto-advance unit?

Hi,

Have you still got the extractor threads engaged?  As this pulls the pinion off the taper will it prevent the pinion from going fully on to the taper?

Dave.

Thanks to you both for your terminology.
The magneto cog won't tighten up onto the camshaft cog or to put another way the magneto pinion won't go onto the taper fully.
I'm scared to over-tighten the bolt. Can the cog be tapped slowly into place with each slight turn of the bolt?
My terminology is rubbish.

Out of my depth cos not done A70/10 since the 60's. But if possible I guess some picks may be helpful.

You need to make sure that the centre nut is pushed into the ATD gear, trapping the washers, before starting to tighten otherwise the left hand threads will engage and prevent the unit sitting on the taper.
