B40 trials bike, The bike was my cousins and has done approx 10 Pre65 Scottish six days.
Now its a small project with various small bits to complete.

Nice looking bike! Any idea what sort of gearbox it's fitted with and is it similar to the ex-army B40WD whose first 3 gears are incredibly low?

BigPete

No its not the WD gear cluster but does have trials gearing on the primary and clutch, the first two gears are really nice and usable with third and fourth  although a bit low for road work are fine for the hill.

Going on my past experiences with a Tiger Cub trials bike with a similar close fitting front mudguard, I found that on muddy uphill sections the mud used to pack between the guard and the wheel and would often jam the wheel to the extent that it would not rotate and on occasions I found myself ascending such a hill with the front wheel completely stationary and the rear wheel unable to provide forward motion! I never did sort this problem out and actually experienced the same phenomena whilst green laning with the same bike! I felt that the modern trend towards massive gaps between wheel and guard would seriously impact on the wonderful appearance of the bike.

Hi,

No experience of riding trials but did observe on a few and noticed that the front mudguard on some bikes would sit very close to the tyre at the back with the gap increasing towards the front to perhaps a couple of inches.  The idea being that any thick mud brought up by the tyre would be 'trimmed' off by the edge of the mudguard.  Any remaining would have space to be carried by the tyre and cleared out the front and sides of the mudguard.
In theory it should work but in reality maybe.

Dave.
