I have this standard arrangement (see picture) on my M33, but there's an issue.

Everything seems to be there, but every time I check the oil I have to be careful that I don't drop or knock item 37 into the oil tank. (Again) This doesn't seem right, so I'm wondering if the oil filter (item 38) is a bit on the short side. Anybody know what's going on?

On my M33 the spring loaded filter top is quite firmly attached to the filter. you have to push on the cap to lock it.

Aha! I will have a look at my one and report back.

My spring loaded filter top only sits quite loosely on the filter. But where should that filter top sit in relation to the oil tank neck?

idie

I'll go into the garage tomorrow and measure it for you.

The top of the filter is 1 inch down from the top of the oil tank neck. The spring load button thing is 1 1/2 inch long and when on the filter the top of the button is 3/8 inch below top of neck. The button thing does come off easily but it come close to the bottom of the neck so cannot fall into the tank. I hope this is of some help.

idie, this is of some help. Thank you.

I've just gone and measured. My oil filter is 1⅝" down from the top of the oil tank neck. The spring loaded button thingy is indeed 1½" inches long, and when on the filter it is about 1" below the top of the neck. So both the filter and the springy thing are ⅝" too low. It seems my filter is a bit on the short side. Perhaps I need a ⅝" spacer.

Oil returns in the centre of the filter. If you were to make a spacer I think you would need to make one a bit like a mushroom. A stem to fit down the centre of the filter so that it will not fall off then fit the spring loaded button thing on top.

I never considered a spacer on the top. I thought that a spacer below the filter would do it. I know a man with a lathe...

I think the return pipe comes up inside the filter. A spacer in the bottom would need to be doughnut shaped, that is why I suggested a spacer on the top.
