Hello to everyone again,
As I said in previous topics, I have a !963 A65 Rocket and have been busy making mods to it to change it to 12Volt and to fit a Pazon electronic ignition system to it.
So far I've fitted the Areg one regulator/rectifier and completed the wiring for that. Today I finished the wiring on the Pazon system and am at the point of setting the timing.
To say I'm confused would be an understatement. I removed the tank and rocker cover so I could see the valve movements, took off the primary side cover and the timing side cover took out the old points etc. I rotated the engine until both valves were shut on cylinder 1.
My BSA instruction manual for the Rocket says the timing should be 37 degrees before TDC and suggests taking a rod, marking it at the rocker cover gasket at TDC then marking it again 0.357" further up, rotating the engine backwards and lining this mark up with the rocker cover gasket. This equates to just over 9mm back down the bore. I did this and then compared it by using a degree wheel on the end of the rotor shaft. This only gave me 18.5 degrees.
If I use the degree wheel to show 37 degrees the other method is miles out.
Does this have anything to do with the camshaft/crankshaft ratio?
Pazon also lists the timing point to be 34 degrees for all BSA twins but I think I'd go with the instruction manual figure.
So the big question for anyone that can help is which is correct, the degree wheel method or the timing stick one?
Many thanks in advance.

Clarke

Hi Clarke,

When you say rotor shaft do you mean the end of the crankshaft where the alternator rotor is fitted?
What I would do is use the rod to determine TDC in the left hand cylinder.  Attach a piece of wire to a primary case screw and set it point to zero on you degree disc.  Turn the engine backwards until past the specified degrees and then bring it forwards until the pointer is indicating the correct setting for BTDC.  Doing this takes out any slack in the gears which could give a slightly inaccurate setting if just turned backwards.
Timing changed to 34º for all models.  SRM say 32º is better for modern fuels.
0.357" is probably not that far off as many of the bSA twins are around this amount of advance.
As the Pazon has a 'wasted spark' it does not matter which cylinder is on compression.

Hi Dave,
Yes I have the degree wheel on the end of the crank where the rotor sits.
I tried both methods. Using the stick on the right hand cylinder once I had TDC marking the stick, adding a second mark at 0.357" then rotating the back wheel backwards a couple of inches, then coming back to the higher mark.
If I used the degree wheel from TDC and rotated the back wheel to 37 degrees it was miles different, the stick went much further into the bore.
I'll try what you suggest and see where I end up.
Thanks
Clarke
