Singles / Advance angle on a C15
Last post by Barnsey - 16 Oct, 2026, 13:03
My No 1 bike, C15, is still not starting, with the new rectifier, despite having a good current of 2.6A.

I have stripped down the distributor, and it is stamped to show that it has an advance of 12 degrees.
Is that right? I thought it was 10 degree on early bikes like my 1962 model.

 What effect would it have?

Found this old spark plug equivalent chart. Looks like, for the N6Y, B8ES is the correct equivalent. These are also hard to find without resistors (BR8ES).

Here's a pic of my pesky Victor. It looked better than it rode!

I'm sure starting technique has been discussed on this forum. I had a procedure that would start the Victor Special from cold within three kicks most times.

I don't believe all 441 Victors are bad. The one I bought was cosmetically good but a mechanical nightmare. Stuff would fail as fast as I could fix it,and I grew tired of fixing it when I could simply jump on my Triumph TR6R 650 and ride with no hassle.

Is just my experience of one particular bike, and I don't want to put you off.

I had a 1969 Victor Special briefly a few years ago. It looked like fun, and on a good day it could indeed be a fun ride. I eventually became tired of its unreliability.

To be fair, it turned out to have been poorly restored, and perhaps a good one would have offered more fun and less frustration. I sold it at a loss and moved on.

Having had a run of plug problems with my Road Rocket I recently changed to  Denso W20ES-U at the recommendation of SRM.  These have fixed all the issue and were not pricy.  Equivalent to a B7ES
