We managed to get it started, in the end, by setting the plug gap.

I have some classic car oil to put in (20/50?), so I'll do that next. And, I'll oil the bores as you say.
I am sure it still has 10/40 in it, as that is all I had at the time I was putting it back together. (It seems like a long time ago).

The keyway is for the timing alignment. The nut keeps it from moving. Clean the key slot and key with brake cleaner. JB weld or Loctite Quickmetal in the gap of the keyway and spray the bore of the rotor with dry lube, then assemble. The dry lube will keep the rotor from sticking. You might need some heat to remove the key later.
Check the rotor timing mark against a degree wheel.

Those parts are not in the '62-'65 parts book on ClassicBritishSpares.com. Parts and repair manuals are free for download. Guessing it might have to do with the gearbox speedometer drive.

A B31 feels very much like a A7/A10 except to the power. The riding position is identical.

Hi,

Interesting re the weight of the B40 and B31.
I have had two B40s and found them to be light and with a shortish wheel base, great on twisty lanes.
I always thought they weighed about 295lbs, as per the Instruction manual, which is not much more than the C15 at 275lbs from which they are derived.
The swinging arm frame B31 share pretty much the same rolling chassis as the A7, A10, Goldstar etc.
The B31 engine is not going to be much lighter than the twins if at all so not much saving.

Dave.

Quote from: limeyrob on 15 Oct, 2026, 18:58 Having had a run of plug problems with my Road Rocket I recently changed to  Denso W20ES-U at the recommendation of SRM.  These have fixed all the issue and were not pricy.  Equivalent to a B7ES

Noted! Thank you, if the N6Ys don't do the trick, I will look for the Denso equivalent you listed.

Actually, it calls for a BE8ES, no clue what the first E is for? I can find reference to the second E, but nothing that explains that letter. That doesn't matter though since they are nowhere to be found on the web.

Is that 60-75 kicking with the throttle wide open?  That's very low and it may not start.
Have you tried putting some thick oil down the plug, this will seal the piston for a few kicks and show it its the rings.
Are the tappets set correctly so the valves close?

Okay.  I stripped, cleaned and reassembled the distributor, and now it is back on the bike with the timing set.

I am concerned about the compression.  I measured it at around 60 - 75 psi.  No 2 bike, which runs, shows 90 - 110 psi, and, according to an online search, it should be 110 to 140.

Would this stop it from starting?  Maybe, but I imagine I would be hearing a pop at least.

Not much, is that the advance at the unit which would be 24 deg on the timing? I suspect so.  Even then this is only 4 deg difference.  Since the timing is set for full advance and that number is the amount it retards it should make no difference to the running and may make starting a bit easier.
