Anyone out there got any methods of dislodging barrels from crankcase on an A65?
I've tried heat along with brass drift around base, hide mallet perpindicular to fins, soaking overnight in penetrine, swearing etc. I am not going to lever it off.
Previous owner must have araldited the bloody thing on.
Any ideas?
Good morning,
Are the pistons free in the bore or is it just the gasket and studs? Perhaps a silly question, but are all the nuts removed from the studs?
It may be possible to get a very thin craft knife blade in to cut out some of the gasket. If a gasket cement that sets has been used and the join has been in place for many years it can be as if it is baked on.
Dave.
Hi,
Try a high quality metal fox wedge.
Best wishes...
just done my A50, first time the barrels have been of since 1969, previous owner had sprayed the engine black.
ended up apping around the base of the barrel with a plastic hammer then the stanley knife to crack the seal at the joint, then found a wooden wedge and managed to start lifting the barrels with that, had to keep going around with the knife blade .
lower the pistons to bottom, if the bottom end is complete, mine wasnt I had already started to strip the motor, sometimes turning over the crank over will let the pistons move the barrels.
if still in the bike , pack some grease down the boars , head on push rods out and kick it over , will come off the studs .
:) :) :)
I assume you have the head off.
So put a block of soft wood about 1 inch thick on top of each piston. Next--Put the head back on finger tight. Next---put it in gear and rock it forward.
As the pistons come up, the blocks will engage on the head and push the barrels up off their seat.
If the engine is on the bench you'll need to "fix" it in position and use a long bar on the timing side drive retaining nut---remember you have to turn the engine backwards in this case.
If the head is stuck on feed about 3or4 foot of hard cord into each cylinder through the plug holes and rock it. That will break it loose. Do the same for stuck valves.

Common problem if silicone sealant has been used.
My method if engine still in frame - head still on, plugs in, push rods out, barrel nuts on but undone a few threads, turn engine over and the compression should move the barrel up to the nuts. Desperate situaton you may need to kick it over.
Those fins can be delicate and can and do break off.
Araldite? Happens, many years a friend araldited his A65 rocker cover in place to stop the oil leak.
Couple of suggestions offered that I will certainly give a go. By the way, the motor is sitting on the bench, but no worries, it will come off eventually. I have made a stand to sit the motor in while working on it. Off for the next few days and will try suggestions out when I get back. Will let you know how it all pans out.

To reply to Dave Brady,
The pistons are free in the bore and yes, the nuts have been removed from the studs.
Cheers,
Davo
FInally got the barrels off. The grease packed in the bores did the trick (along with a fair bit of persuasion).
Thanks for the replies,
Cheers,
Davo
Does anyone know anybody that can braze cast iron fins in the Hinckley, Leicestershire area?
