Title: A50 Gear return spring
Post by: blackeyeian on 12 Sep, 2020, 13:32
Hi all   My gear return spring doesn't seem to have a good return - For gears 3 7 4 - up & down - you have to re position it with your foot before finding the next gear.
I attach a photo of the spring position as it stands - I was wondering if this is correct or should the spring arms be crossed around the lug to generate a greater spring action?
Or is there a stronger spring available?
Regards Ian

Is it actually an A50/A65 spring. It may be for an A10 or the like. In error I fitted an A65 spring in the gearbox of my Shooting Star. It worked ok but it was very heavy on the foot as the spring was so strong. Try a new spring that may be the answer.

I thought the spring should be crossed. I am sure I've seen a vid from srm showing a rebuild and mentioning that the spring should be crossed.

I think it is, the cross over will be behind.

Hi blackeyeian I had a similar problem with my A65 thought it was the spring but I knew the spring did not have any  wear from new I could get first and second found out that the grub screw that holds  the plate  that holds the pauls and springs in on the selector was loose not allowing it to work this was tightened  up and now ok, hope this might help , Roy

Hi Ian,
I recently had a similar situation with my early A50;  in this case it was a loose key holding the spring carrier on the gear change shaft.  Easily fixed and looseness cured.
