Title: 1939 BSA B21 Saddle - help please!
Post by: Tommo on 01 Sep, 2020, 09:48
Hello gentleman, this is my first post on the site following, following months of reading forum posts, which has been very helpful. I have now took the plunge and purchase a 1939 BSA B21 Delux, and  I was wondering if any one could help me?

The bike is basically complete and running, although I do intend doing a full restoration to near factory finish, (i just like doing it). I have just started collecting parts, which I think could take some time based on internet searches!!

One part I am after is the correct saddle, although I can find plenty, I really don't know what I'm looking for. I think the original was  produced by Terry's?. If so, does any one have out there have an original B21 saddle, from which they could provide the following information:

1: What is the saddle's length and width at its widest points.
2: How many springs does it have.
3: Do the springs go front to back, or is there a joint plate with additional springs near the front of the saddle.
4: What length are the springs fixing the springs to the frame.

Photos would be appreciated, if not to difficult

Thank you in advance

Great seat Craig, and thanks for your help. Sadly its just too big for the small B21. If there is any one else out there, that who may has an original, if you could please provide the various sizes, that would really be very helpful in my search.

I have a B21 Deluxe, I don't know if the saddle is original or not but I'll take a look and report back.

According to the spares book the B21 Deluxe had a Terry S782 saddle (although I'm not certain how much help that is!)

Here are a couple of photographs of my saddle.   I have no idea if it is the original or even made by Terry.  There is no manufacturers label on it although the cover material does appear to be lined with wool and fairly old (but 81 years old? :-\)

One thing is for certain, not all the springs are original, a right motley bunch if ever there was one!

One point of note is that all of the saddle photographs I managed to find seem to have two sets of springs linked by a plate, my saddle only has one set attached to a pivoting plate at the front which is probably significant but I have no idea what it tells us!

Sorry I couldn't provide more help!

Alan

Thanks for the information and photos Alan. Interesting you comments regarding two sets of springs. I've spent sometime looking for unrestored bikes that have come on the market over the past few years, concentrating mainly on rust buckets, as these tend to have more original parts fitted if untouched for decades. The saddles do appear to have two set of springs with a link plate, so I'm assuming this is the original style that was fitted (Terrys S782 as you mentioned previously). On this basic yours may be a replacement at some time.

So whilst there are plenty of saddles available with two rows of springs, they all tend to be too big of the B21. What I've decided I really need is an old rusty original to buy/borrow, and I can then arrange for a copy or to made. I know this may seem over the top to many, but I just like things to be near 'original' as possible.

This is how "snug" the nose of the saddle is to the tank on mine,  I suppose a longer, two spring sets one would fit as well? :-\

You really need to track down a known Terry saddle of the period I suppose to be sure, even a catalogue wouldn't necessarily answer the question unless it was extremely detailed.   Imagine uncovering an original drawing of the S782!   If you did, I'd rush out and buy some lottery tickets while your luck holds!
