Title: Fork stancions
Post by: Mike Farmer on 08 Aug, 2020, 15:18
 :) :) :)

Greetings. and a request for a bit of brain power please.

I have 3 bikes sitting in my shed. One A50 and two A65's. My problem started when I found an A65 would not stand properly on the centre stand. Strange. The rear shocks and fork stancions are new, but it appears that the frame  is too high off the ground. so-- after a lot of bouncing the forks etc the problem is still there. Next I did a bit of measuring and find that two of the bikes Spindle centre to top of yoke are 28 inches. The funny one is 30inches. It would appear that I have some "over length" shafts.

Any guesses as to what I may have that makes such a difference. I didn't buy the fork shafts, the owner handed them to me still in wrapping and I fitted them. Never even dreamed of measuring cos I thought they were all the same.

So over to you for another dose of advice----please. I guess that ultimately they will need to be changed. Not something that I am looking forward to. BUT??????????

Hi Mike,

Are the two that are the same, early models with the slightly dropped top yolk and 18" front wheel?  This could account for about 2".

Dave.

I can tell you the length of the ones for an A10 which will be the same as the early A65 and A50. They are   22 1/2 inches long. If someone has fitted early top bushes in the forks they will sit an inch higher.

Mike - Are you forks the damper rod type from 1966 or the earlier type?

The full width hub up to 1965 with drop top yoke are about 21 inches long, 2 bleed holes in the side.

The Cyclone and Spitfire Hornet up to 1965 season, non damper rod take same shaft as A10 which is 22 1/2 inches long.

The 1966 damper rod type have 4 bleed holes around the base and are the same a length as the A10 - 19 inch front wheel.

There are other similar looking shafts used on C15 competition forks, the 1968 Bantam Sport and others I am sure.

I.ve just looked at the old pair from my A50 with full width hub and they are 21.5".

I'll strip them and see what I've got and then I shall maybe swap them with my trike as the extra length won't matter on that.

Let you know.
