Title: A10 engine taking off
Post by: fenderman! on 08 Aug, 2020, 11:06
I have a 1955 A10...a few times now the engine after running a few minutes, the engine gradually accelerated to almost like a runaway motor.of course I killed it as to prevent any damage..I also replaced the side cover of the 376 carb with a clear one to look at the float bowl level as I did want to know about that. After killing it I did look at it and notice the float level was very low..I did watch it fill back up..can this low level cause a runaway condition...I do have a filter on each side coming in that are older and will replace..

Hi,

If the filters look a bit blocked then try with both taps on or replacing with just piece of fuel pipe.  This should show if the filters are a cause.  Also, are there filters on the taps?  These could need a clean as well as the small gauze filter in the bottom of the carb.

A low float level will not cause the engine to increase from tickover to a speed that needs the engine to shut off, for that to happen the throttle slide will have open. the cause could be a jammed throttle cable whereby if you turn the handlebars the jammed cable pulls on the throttle slde. I would be looking at he throttle linkage and also if the throttle slde is sticking. The float bowl level is set by checking that level in the bowl comes upto the pimple that is on the outside of the bowl cover just below the M and A in the word Amal. There are a couple of ways you can do this one is to use a clear temporary cover and mark the spot on the clear cover then fit and check . The other is to use a piece clear plastic tubing that is a tight fit over the pilot screw after removing the cover nut, bend the tube into a U shape and hold next to the cover plate turn petrol on and it will find its level and indicte wether the level is high low or correct. you can buy special washers from Burlen to fit under the tickler mechanism to adjust to the correct level.

I have experienced the engine racing after warm up. Turned out to be the slide sticking when the carb got warm. Change of carb body sorted it.

Sounds crazy but I'd think it's a cable or slide thing.is that possible.i looked at it pretty close after the first time.

Good morning,

Does this happen without touching the throttle?  So the bike is ticking over and then without touching the throttle or moving the bars the revs start to increase to a point were you must cut the engine.
Has this just started to happen after some cleaning or adjustments?

If you had a clogged fuel filter and the bowl got low of fuel, the engine as fuel ran out would run lean and rise in revs.
Ever notice when you run out of gas, before the engine dies it revs up a bit?
