Title: Amal 276 Cleaning advice
Post by: chrisb on 24 Jul, 2020, 14:42
I'm in the final stages (after 2 years) of getting my uncle's old B31 (1954) back on the road.  Grateful for any advice on how to do a quick clean of the Amal 276 carb.  I want to do as as little dismantling as possible, unless I have to.  I guess it may need a bit of a clean having not been used for some 3 years or so.  Many thanks!

obviously if you dont have access or a friend with an ultrasonic cleaner then its a case of a can of aerosol carb cleaner and a compressor with a couple of screwdrivers. the carb cleaner should disolve most sticky old fuel.
needs a good soak and beware of using small drills , useful for cleaning small passages but easy to break off.

really need to dismantle completely to get a good clean, as a useful guide

 :) :) :) :)

I suggest: - :)

Strip it (note any settings so that you can put it back the same) then put the body in a saucepanful of water, add a slack handful of ordinary kitchen soda and BOIL it for about 20 mins. Its never harmed any of mine but I'm reliably inform it could cause some distortion. Any jets that won't move easily---just leave em in-- thats better than nurgled jets.

Many thanks Guys.   A newly discovered gearbox oil leak currently has my attention, so the carb will have to wait  :(
