Title: valve clearance- stuck/stubborn locknut
Post by: hoogerbooger on 04 Jul, 2020, 18:04
As the tank was off , thought I check the valve clearances on my B40 Star. Inlet should be 0.2mm and can get 0.3 in and move side to side.  I Have a good but short 7/16 ring spanner, but the locknut is not keep to move. As I've not done this before I'm not sure if I can damage the rocker/stuff if I give it too much elbow.

Any tips/advice ?

(By the way, what would be the expected effect of the extra clearance on the inlet side. ( exhaust outlet side seemed ok with 0.25mm.  could just push a 0.3mm in but it would not slide side to side)

If necessary, just shock the nut into turning by tapping the end of the ring spanner with a soft hammer (or the side of your hand).

If you have excess clearance on the inlet side, the main effect will be a noisy tappet since the quieting ramps on the cam lobe will no longer do their job. If the clearance is extremely excessive, you would not get enough fuel mixture into the cylinder and will loose power.

Good fitting spanner or socket and it will undo. The biggest problem I have is holding the square headed adjuster still while nipping up the locknut.
Ps the locknut does not need to be over tightened. You have found out they tend to get tighter when the engine is run!
As said the biggest problem with an excessive clearance is noise.

Ta. Yes it was rattly.

Now moving and reset.
There is some free play in both rockers. I have pulled the rockers up to set, to make sure I am setting the max gap.

That the right thing to do

(Rockers don't seem to move otherwise unless I jam in a feeler that's a bigger size)

Worrying now the valve may not close fully !
