Title: strobe timing marks a65 spitfire boyer bransden
Post by: yellowtrumpet on 04 Jul, 2020, 16:08
Hi,
Just upgraded my spitfire to bnr belt drive and when doing so luckily I spotted some play on the main shaft.
This turned out to be a loose nut on the gearbox cover side of the shaft which is now sorted.
Anyway I marked up the boyer rotor plate and stator plate before removing these to get to the shaft, I put them back as before but thought I'd check now its back together but I have a question.
Unfortunately there is no hole in the crank I can see for the timing tool so I just used a pencil to get RHS piston at top of travel.
this is 67 spitfire dos anyone know why its missing? maybe only on later models?
With this in position I found both the boyer and rotor line up ok as in the pictures shown but there are additional holes on the primary chaincase , my understanding is 34 deg optimal for spitfire - there is another hole there also see pic and probably this is 34?
My question is when I strobe it do i use the pin or the other hole just back of it for 34 or is it totally out and i need to put a new mark 34 deg back from the pin
Probably being a dumbo sorry

Not sure why you don't have a timing aperture on your crank cases. These were fitted from 1965 on, so unless you have mismatched cases???

As your not rubbing energy transfer ignition you want to be using the left hand hole for the timing. I've fell into the trap thinking the right hand side is for 34 and the left is 37, sadly it isn't. And there's about 7° difference between the two holes so if you do get it started at that point it'll run like rubbish (ask me how I know) so you want your timing pin in the left hole only.

Also looks like you still have the keepers stuck to your alternator rotor??? If you you need to remove them before you cause serious damage.

Hope this helps

Thanks Allan,
Yes I removed the stator  , I put on a new rotor/stator while i was replacing the clutch with belt drive. I put the keepers back on to protect rotor while getting the static timing sorted by turning wheel by hand with plugs out - I think I would struggle to get the stator back on with these !!
Interesting about the crank, i have seen on another thread the same issue seems the flywheel was on wrong way round? Or maybe an older one fitted in the past without the timing slot - its definately not there its not exactly hard to miss, and i turned it slowly by hand a few times to check - thats actually why i popped the stator off it made it slightly easier to turn.

Cheers Steve

Hi,
Mismatched cranks in engine cases are not uncommon. My cases have the circular timing hole and a slot in the crank, like you I roughly timed and adjusted with a strobe.

Best wishes...

When my current A65 was first done about 15 years ago it came back to me with the flywheel on the wrong way around. Not easy to change unless you strip the motor so I wouldn't worry, you've done the best way by doing it off the stator. The early models didn't have that window for strobe timing so the slot was a real help. Also with having points is a big advantage to be able to lock the crank in position for setting points gaps etc, a thing of the past with Boyer and other electronic ignitions

Isn't the Boyer left hole for Counter clockwise A65's and the right hole for Clockwise bikes?

On the Boyer stator plate yes. Looking at the image the white dot on the rotor is visible through the left hole.

The correct strobe time position on an A65 is always the left hole.

Yes that's correct .. its annoying boyer wrote  CW and anti CW on the underside of the plate which you cant read when its on !
